Santa Cycle 2016 and other events.

The dust had hardly settled for the new committee of Innisfree Wheelers when the action started for yet another cycling year.

Registration & Club gear night;
This took place on the 1st of November, and by all accounts it was a very successful event. More than thirty members signed up again and this included about five new members. We always welcome all new members to our club and we have established a reputation of being a friendly bunch, with no illusions about our own cycling abilities!

This year for the first time since our founding, we have decided to give our famous outfits a modern face lift. This has come about as a result of the more fashion conscious female members suggesting a more modern colour combination for the bib shorts. Thankfully this will not affect our now famous jersey colours so anyone with current gear can be reassured that they are still in the club colours. We always encourage members to wear the club colours on as many occasions as possible. Contact our PRO John Greene (pro@innisfreewheelers.com) or treasurer John Connolly (treasurer@innisfreewheelers.com) if you require any item of club gear.

Summer TT League Presentation night;

This event took place in Hugh Moran’s pub in Ballintogher on Wednesday night the 9th of November last. The league consisted of six TT races. 2 x 16k, 2 x 30k and finally 2 x 40k. There were many categories catering for novices, juniors, ladies, seniors, and all veteran age groups from over forty up to over sixty. The event was well supported during the summer months, although numbers fell towards the end of the series – mainly due to the poor summer weather. The club will shortly come together with the other clubs in Sligo with a view to creating a more attractive summer league in 2017.

Innisfree Wheelers would like to thank Hugh Moran for kindly donating the prize to the overall winner of the series. We also enjoyed Hugh’s hospitality when he provided tea and sandwiches after each race. We would also like to thank all the marshals who turned out each evening and especially our time keeper the very experienced Martin O’Hara. Prize winners this year were as follows;

Overall winner and 1st Senior – Stephen Mullane.

1st Lady – Erika Murray.

1st Junior – Pauric Maxwell.

1st Novice – Conor Gilligan.

1st over 40 – Pat Moffatt.

1st over 50 – Timmy McCarthy.

Bike Maintenance workshop;

This took place in the Knocknarea Arena at IT Sligo on Saturday the 12th of November. David Gunning from Boyle was the outside expert brought in by the club to facilitate members requiring knowledge on any or all aspects of bike maintenance. This ranged from simply oiling the chain or changing an inner tube, to the dismantling of cassettes etc. From feedback received, this was another excellent workshop. David went to all extremes to give individual attention to the attendees throughout the very informative workshop. We hope to include some more bike maintenance tips in a very detailed two day training course coming up in February of 2017. Full details of this weekend workshop will be announced shortly.

Wheelers doing the turbo session in 2015; Eddie Ryan, Joe Gethins, John Delorey, Geraldine Delorey, John Molloy and Anthony McGoldrick.

  Members will take turns on the two turbo’s  for up to an hour each and two other members will collect funds for the charity assisted by members of Sligo Lions Club. We still need some volunteers for this event so if you are free that Saturday please contact our secretary ASAP. (secretary@innisfreewheelers.com).

Santa Cycle 2016;

Although the turbo sessions on Saturday should have shook off the sore heads following the club party, we have our most popular annual fun cycling event lined up for Sunday the 11th of December, starting from the Knocknarea Arena at Sligo IT at 11am.

Registration is taken on the morning from 10am with a donation of just €15. This event is also supporting the Sligo Lions Club Christmas Food Appeal. We will do a tour of Lough Gill dressed in our Santa suits or indeed any other item of clothing that is seasonal. We have had Moose suits, Christmas Fairies, Reindeers, and of course a few elves in the past. There are prizes for the best costumes worn by a lady and by a gentleman. We will all be stopping at The Blue Devon Pub in Dromahair for mince pies and tea or coffee. (nothing stronger allowed if in control of a road bike!!).

We then carry on and reassemble together outside town to parade down though the shopping streets of Sligo. Invariably the whole cortege then ends up in Connolly’s pub on Markievicz Road. Here there is more food (baked by some of our members) and if required some hot whiskey to wash it all down. This has become a very popular event on our calendar and we would encourage anyone in Sligo to join us on that great cycle around Lough Gill.
