Carmel Scott Competes in the UCI Gran Fondo World championships
Our own Carmel Scott an active member of our club who often enjoys a spin with the A group, recently attended the 2024 UCI Gran Fondo World championships held this September in Aalborg, Denmark; having qualified through the Gran Fondo event when it was held in Sligo at the end of June this year.
Carmel had put in a huge amount of training indoor and outdoors in all weathers in preparation for the Gran Fondo road race World Series organized by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) held in Sligo, where she participated in one of the main events the Medio Fondo held on Sunday June 30th this year. She qualified in Sligo as one of the top finishers in her age group to attend the worlds in Aalberg, Denmark representing Ireland internationally in road racing on a world stage. The Gran Fondo is a series designed with high level competition for masters and amateur cyclists. Carmel and her husband Rod who provided technical back up and support along with members of her immediate family travelled to Denmark to see her participate in this prestigious event. Carmel proudly donned the Irish green cycling jersey representing Ireland for the event and completed a 113km route of 1,000 m elevation. She came 17th place in her age group in this world classification event on September 1st.The Medio Fondo distance is the official UCI Gran Fondo World Championships distance for all men 60 plus and women 50 plus. While promoting high level competition for amateurs, one of the aims of the Gran Fondo series is the globalization of “Cycling for All”.
Huge kudos to Carmel as she did us all proud on the cycling world stage. Everyone in the club is so proud and delighted for Carmel and wish Carmel continued success in all her cycling endeavours.
